Roger Saxby
Roger was born in the Midlands of England and was a schoolboy there when World War II began in 1939. In 1942, his father, Leslie, was dispatched to South Africa by the Royal Air Force to help establish a base for Catalina seaplanes at St Lucia, in response to the threat posed by German U-boats in the Indian Ocean. Roger accompanied his father to South Africa, attending boarding school in Durban and spending his school holidays in Zululand. After the war ended in 1945, Roger and his father remained in South Africa. Roger later completed a BSc degree in Land Surveying at the University of Natal.
Beryl Saxby
Beryl was born in Durban to Harry and Sadie, both of whom were born in South Africa. She grew up on a farm in the Underberg district and attended boarding school in Underberg before qualifying as a registered nurse at Grey’s Hospital in Pietermaritzburg in 1944. Roger and Beryl married in 1959 and shared 49 years together, raising three children and becoming grandparents to nine grandchildren.
A Life of Family, Faith and Giving
As lifelong Christians, Roger and Beryl were deeply committed to their family, to lifelong learning, and to helping people in need. They believed strongly in creating opportunities that would help people build better lives for themselves and lived by the principle: “Give a person a fish and feed them for a day; teach a person to fish and feed them for life.”
The Roger & Beryl Saxby Charitable Foundation was established in their memory to continue and build upon the values they lived by, supporting organisations and initiatives that create meaningful and lasting change in the lives of others.
